Biography

William was born on Raiatea to a Tahitian mother. He studied in Tahiti before continuing his education in the United States, spending two years in Los Angeles and six in Hawaii. He graduated in Honolulu in 1967.

His father, American painter Edgar Leeteg, became known as “Leeteg of Tahiti” for his paintings on black velvet. C. J. Cook’s biography covers Leeteg and his black velvet art.

In Honolulu, William learned his trade from professional guides. He later returned to Tahiti to guide visitors himself, with a particular interest in the island's history, geography, plants and wildlife.
